Intertax Free 1040

When can your federal tax return be filed for free?

Intertax Free 1040 is designed for qualifying taxpayers with a basic Form 1040 tax situation. Eligibility is based on income, filing status, household information and the forms or schedules required to complete the return.

$

A qualifying federal return has a $0 preparation fee.

To qualify, the taxpayer must meet the annual Intertax Free 1040 income limit and have a tax situation covered by the program. Eligibility is confirmed after the information and tax documents are reviewed through our application.

What is considered a qualifying basic Form 1040 return?

A return may qualify for Intertax Free 1040 when all applicable program requirements are met, including:

  • Your household income is at or below the annual program income limit established by Intertax Block.
  • Your filing status is Single or Married Filing Jointly.
  • You and your spouse, when applicable, have valid Social Security numbers or qualifying ITINs.
  • You claim the standard deduction instead of itemizing deductions.
  • Your income comes primarily from Forms W-2, limited taxable interest or unemployment compensation.
  • Your return does not require business, rental, investment-sale or other advanced tax schedules.

Situations that may be included

Subject to final eligibility review, Intertax Free 1040 may include:

  • W-2 wages, salaries and tips
  • Limited taxable interest income
  • Unemployment compensation
  • Standard deduction
  • Student Loan Interest Deduction
  • American Opportunity Tax Credit
  • Lifetime Learning Credit
  • One qualifying federal Form 1040 return

Situations that require a paid service

A paid filing option will generally be required when the return includes:

  • Self-employment or Form 1099-NEC income
  • Business income or Schedule C
  • Rental property income or Schedule E
  • Stock, cryptocurrency or investment sales
  • Itemized deductions on Schedule A
  • Social Security or retirement distributions
  • Foreign earned income or foreign accounts
  • Gambling winnings
  • Complex credits or additional schedules
  • Returns requiring specialized tax research

What about dependents and additional tax credits?

Dependents and certain refundable credits may require additional due diligence, documentation and tax forms. Returns claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit or other credits may therefore require a paid filing service unless Intertax Block expressly includes them in the current season’s Free 1040 program.

What happens if my return does not qualify?

You may begin your return through the Intertax Block application at no cost. If the information you enter requires forms or services that are not included in Intertax Free 1040, we will notify you before preparation continues under a paid service. You will be shown the applicable service and price before being charged.

What is included with Intertax Free 1040?

  • One qualifying federal Form 1040 return
  • Access to the Intertax Block filing application
  • Secure upload of qualifying tax documents
  • Electronic filing of the qualifying federal return
  • Electronic signature and filing-status notifications

State returns, amended returns, prior-year returns, professional consultations, audit support and additional services are not included unless expressly stated.

Important program details and disclosures

Intertax Free 1040 eligibility is subject to the income limits, tax forms, filing statuses and other requirements established for the applicable filing season.

Meeting an income requirement alone does not guarantee eligibility. A return may require a paid service when additional forms, schedules, credits, deductions, tax research or professional review are necessary.

The program income limit may be based on household income, adjusted gross income, federal poverty guidelines or another measure selected and published by Intertax Block for the applicable tax year.

A state tax return is not automatically included. State filing fees and other charges may apply.

Starting an application does not guarantee that the completed tax return will qualify for free filing. The taxpayer will receive notice before being moved to a paid service.
